Oceanography SA - RSS Information

Keep up to date with the latest changes on the Oceanography SA Website via our RSS Feeds.
If you're already familiar with RSS, simply set up your RSS Reader to fetch the following feed:

What is RSS?

RSS, which stands for either "Rich Site Summary" or "Really Simple Syndication" or "Remote Site Syndication" - depending on who you ask (and their mood), provides updates from a website in a simple form for your computer to download. Website owners summarise the latest changes made to their website in an RSS file and upload this file to their website. By using a program called an Aggregator (or RSS Reader), you can automatically monitor these RSS files for changes and be notified when updates occur. With RSS you will automatically receive a short message, similar to an email, each time something new appears in the RSS file. In simple terms, you'd be notified automatically, whenever a change on a website occurs.

Whats the benefit of using RSS?

For website users, like yourself, using the RSS feed is a great way to save time. You no longer have to manually sift through an entire website to check for updated information - this gets sent to you in a short description, along with a hyperlink that takes you straight to what you're looking for.

For website owners, RSS makes it easy for new content to be seen and published.

For everyone, spammers cannot send spam messages through an RSS feed unless they manage to hack into the webserver. So for most of the time, the only person who can communicate to you via an RSS feed is the owner of the website.

How do I make use of RSS?

The easiest way (for me at least) to get RSS is to use the Sage plugin that is available for the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

If you'd rather use a different RSS Reader, there are thousands available for all kinds of PC's available on the internet. A simple Google search on the phrase "Open Source RSS reader" will confirm this. To set up RSS, simply download and install one of the many RSS aggregators available on the web.
